There are limitations to where people who have DP placards/plates and DV plates can park. Individuals in Class III or IV have significant limitations and are usually unable to participate in any physical activity. If you’ve been placed in Class I or II, you only experience mild symptoms and can still take part in physical activity. I am also sometimes late to class because I couldn’t get across campus fast enough or because the handicap spot I wanted to park in was blocked, and sometimes I’m in such excruciating pain that I can’t focus in class. So when a space opened up directly across from arguably the city’s best brewery—a handicap parking spot no less—I deemed it destiny. When is it acceptable to park in a disability parking spot with an access aisle? Although it is nothing new, this week especially I have noticed people “just stopping for a second” in the handicap parking spots or the lines next to them, especially to drop off big-little baskets for their sorority. During this year many people have fussed at me for this (and honestly sometimes still do because I am hardheaded). They are valid for two years and expire on June 30 every odd-numbered year. People in these two classes will likely have no problem getting their physician to approve of a disabled parking permit because of their limiting condition. After parking in the South Oxford Campus’s ADA lot using my handicap parking placard, I approached the shuttle parked 15 feet away from my car to ride to campus. The number of placards an organization gets depends on the number of active vehicle registrations it has.
An organization is only entitled to get enough placards for each active vehicle. To renew a disability license plate, you must renew your vehicle registration with the TX DMV. Disability license plates are valid for 5 years as long as your vehicle registration is valid. The matching registration certificate must be in the vehicle and presented on demand by a Peace Officer. Customers requiring an accessible parking permit for 30 days or less may have a doctor fill out the CampusParc Temporary Accessible Parking Request Form or provide their state-issued temporary disability placard registration and provide it to CampusParc. I spend almost that much to fill up the gas tank or go to the movies (granted, 3D with popcorn and drink, but still). Also, sometimes I see people park, hang the placard on the rearview mirror and walk down the block with no apparent physical difficulties. In that half hour, my handicap placard weaseled its way off of our rental car’s rearview mirror in a feat rivaling Houdini’s famed suspended straightjacket escape routines. The reality though, was that I did need it, but instead of accepting help, my pride stood in the way. The distance you’re able to walk without resting helps demonstrate your need for a permit. Unfortunately, we arrived about 15 minutes before the Walk of Champions, so almost all paths from where we were dropped off were blocked. These types of medical issues often make it extremely challenging for individuals to walk long distances. Make sure to read all posted signs and obey all “No Parking” signs, as disabled placards, DP, and DV plates are not exempt. Read on for more info! If someone wants to rob us, make the fine more than a slap on the wrist. Make it hurt. Make it memorable. It does not make me less of a person, it does not mean I am weak, it does not mean I’m needy or a burden, it simply means I need help, as we all do sometimes. But I also told them those fees need to be higher. The driver must obey other parking laws and pay any parking fees.
